Hacienda #1 – Bonita & Los Altos Start Off Best

The seven team Hacienda League met for their first cluster meet on a hot Wednesday at Bonelli Park.  Running a slightly long version of the 3 mile Invite course, the Bonita girls took their first step to defending their league title while the Los Altos declared themselves to be the new boss of the league.

Marissa Scott (c)

In the girls race, the Bearcats used strong front running from defending league champ Marissa Scott, the winner in 20:28, along with an excellent 4th place from her sister Kailyn (21:22) and 21:40/6th place finish from rapidly improving Lexie Jackson to total 35.  They were pushed to the end by fast-rising Walnut, who tallied 43 points.  The Mustangs were led by an excellent 2nd place, 20:38 effort from frosh Anahi Betart, along with a key 7, 8 finish from frosh Rachel Shapiro (21:47) and soph Melanie Deciga (22:04).  Los Altos (3rd/64) was strong up front, with Krystal Martinez (5th/21:32), Bianca Hernadez (9th/22:10) and Brittany Aranda (10th/22:13), but their 4 & 5 were back to challenge the team leaders.

Diamond Bar rode a 41 second gap to fourth place, led by Kelly Kuo (17th/23:13).  Rowland was 5th, led by a strong 21:12, 3rd place from Courtney Canchola.  Karissa Austin (22nd/23:29) paced 6th placed West Covina and Celina Kissinger (33rd/24:27) was best for Diamond Ranch.

Rowland's Nick Rivera

SGV 800m champ Nick Rivera shook off a tough night at Woodbridge to lead teammate David Galvez to an easy 1/2, 17:14/17:19 finish.  But Rowland‘s 3, 4, 5 could only finish 21, 22, 29 and Raiders ended up 3rd with 75 points.  Diamond Bar‘s James McCreary was third at 17:33, but the rest of the Brahmas were to far back and finished 6th.

Los Altos, second last year, to their first step to the top with a win today, paced by the senior pair of Jair Juarez (4th/17:37) and Bobby Villagomez (5th/17:52), with junior Mark Huizar 10th at 17:59.  Soph Dillon Nobbs was 6th/17:54 and led the rapidly improving Bearcats to a 2nd place finish.

Frosh Millen Trujillo had a big day to finish 9th in 18:02, leading Walnut to the all-important 4th place finish.  West Covina put Tyler Potts (8th/18:00) and Diego Duran (10th/18:07) in the top 10, but their 1:43 gap left them fifth.  Diamond Ranch was 7th, paced by Sergio Perez (35th/19:57).

Baseline: Glendora Girls Break Through

Tori Whitworth

The recent league realingnment process left Glendora adrift as the only SGV school in an otherwise IE Baseline League.  The Tartan girls announced their presence today by winning the first cluster meet run over a tough three mile course at Glen Helen Park.  Glendora tallied 39 points to beat CIF Div. I Rancho Cucamonga, 2nd with 68 points.  GHS’s number one was soph Emily Hoey, 3rd overall.  The leaders were together, and as two Rancho girls broke away, Emily was left in space ahead of the fourth runner.  She fought well to hold her space to the end, but so did here teammates.  Glendora was second at the two mile mark, but frosh Micaela Lamb and sophs Chloe Arriaga, & Tori Whitworth moved up well to finish 7, 8, 9 and Cori Harral closed it out in 12th.

The CIF Div. II #5 boys ran into Rancho Cucamonga’s buzz saw, as the CIF Div. 1 #2 dropped a perfect 15 on the field.  There was lead pack of about 15 into the second mile, and as Rancho moved off the front, Glendora’s scorers moved up to finish 8, 9, 10, 11, 13 with just a 14 second gap.  Senior Aaron Forburger (16:21) and junior Ryan Sanchez (16:22) led the Tartans.

Camino del Rey: St. Paul & Cantwell SHM Trade Places; Hubert and De La Torre Just Miss

The Camino Del Rey Association, which combines the Del Rey and Camino Real leagues, met for their first cluster meet Tuesday at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale.  These two parochial leagues come from all over Southern California, but include five schools from the SGV.

The Camino Real League got things going over the flat three mile course on a hot afternoon with a stirring battle in the boys race between the SGV’s St. Paul and Cantwell, with the Cardinals taking narrow 28-30 edge.  The Swordsmen had three in the first five, with senior Kyle Fetter (16:53) and frosh Aleksie Dominguez (16:54) going an untroubled 1-2, but Cantwell responded with a 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 grouping, putting six below St. Paul’s #4 for the win.  CSHM was led by seniors Jesse Bonilla (17:07) and Art Hernandez (17:35) with Bobby Gonzalez (18:11) as the critical #5 man.

The girls side was also essentially a race between St. Paul and Cantwell SHM, but this time St. Paul came out on top by a big 23-35 margin, with junior Ariel Melendrez the easy winner at 20:08.  CSHM’s Lauren Puebla (Sr, 21:03) and Diana Parra (Jr, 21:09) were the next two across, but then St. Paul went 4, 5, 6, 7 to close things out.

The stronger Del Rey league featured an individual showdown between La Salle junior Daniel De La Torre and Cathedral‘s #1 Adam Avila, fresh from a 14:39 at Woodbridge.  But the showdown went immediately off course when Daniel backtracked after missing a turn in the first mile, leaving a gap that Adam maintained the rest of the way for a 14:59 to 15:05 win.  The team showdown between CIF Div. IV #1 Don Bosco Tech and Div. III #3 Cathedral didn’t materialize as Bosco either held back their runners or suffered an off day struggled with several injuries and illnesses according to Coach Sal Perez.  Cathedral took an easy 23-51 win, with an improving Bishop Amat finishing third.  Tech’s best on the day was it’s previous #5, junior Justin Avellan (6th, 16:02), while the Lancers were led by senior Patrick Tarango (7th, 16:05).  La Salle was fourth in this five team league.

On the girls side, Bishop Amat’s fast rising frosh Emily Hubert battled St. Joseph’s top two throughout the race.  Emily had a five yard lead at the mile, but was 20 yards adrift at 2 miles as the St. Joseph girls pushed forward.  In the final mile Hubert fought back, passing Gabi Gonsalez and almost getting to frosh Marissa Pluma, who finished first in 18:46 to Emily’s 18:48.  The Lancer’s, helped by junior Elizabeth Navarette’s 10th/20:52 were third in the team battle to St. Joseph’s and Bishop Montgomery.  Senior Mariana Henry (11th, 20:58) was best for fourth-place La Salle.

Meet Bobby Villagomez

No sports rewards hard work like cross country.  Talent matters, but talent without a lot of running, a lot of hard running, goes nowhere.  Slowly.

Bobby Villagomez, a senior at Los Altos, decided in June to find out how good he could be.  He entered the season with modest track PR’s of 4:42.74 and 10:42.25 and a Mt.SAC best of 17:08.  But after a solid summer of training with coach Anthony Ossa, Bobby opened big with a 15:11 for 3 miles at the Don Bosco meet, and followed that up last Saturday with a 15:00 effort at the Rosemead Invite, an 86 second improvement from last year!  Now he’s this week’s featured runner.

How and when did you start running?  “I started running because my sister was having a fundraiser and one of her friend’s brothers was a cross country runner. My mom wanted me to do something because my freshman year I did nothing so she took me to practice and I have been running since then.”

Bobby Villagomez

What is your favorite workout during XC season?“My favorite workouts are trail runs because it is just so much fun to explore the wilderness and actually be in nature.”

How much did you train over the summer? – “I trained a lot, I do not think I have ever trained so hard, I always wanted to be #1 on my team since I first started and I knew it would take time and dedication and I have always tried my best and it has gotten me really far.”

What do your think about or concentrate on during XC races?“During the races I always focus on either the person in front of me and once I focus everything else just goes away and I eventually pass him up, and if I am leading I focus on my breathing and on the sound of the person behind me and I make sure I cannot hear it.”

Describe your last race. “My last race was just phenomenal. It was a cold dark night and there were about 200 runners, I took the lead of the 1st mile and slowed down a bit around the second and I took it on home and got 3rd place with a time of 14:59.61. It is the 1st time I have ever broken 15 minutes and I think I might have the record for Los Altos High School.”

Five Fun Questions
  • Best place for tacos?“Hands down King Taco, they are just amazing.”
  • Favorite subject in school?“History.  I love to learn about the past and what achievements we as the human race have done.”
  • The song that’s in your head right now? “Sorry 4 the Wait” by Lil Wayne.
  • Short shorts or long in training? – “Short”
  • What trainers do you wear? “Asics Gel Nimbus 12”

Bobby’s next race is today’s Hacienda League Cluster Meet at Bonelli Park

Cluster Meets Start This Week

The heart of our sport are the league cluster meets, in which the teams of a particular league meet to compete.  While large Saturday Invites are exciting, cluster meets bring and intimacy and a personal element to the competition.

For most leagues, the cluster meets are used, in combination with the league final meet, to determine the league champs and CIF qualifying – so they matter a lot.  Here’s this week’s schedule:

Tuesday, 9/20 – Camino Del Rey League @ Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale

Wednesday, 9/21 – Baseline League @ Glen Helen Park in Devore; Hacienda League @ Bonelli Park in San Dimas

Thursday, 9/22 – Pacific League @ Griffith Park in Los Angeles; Rio Hondo League @ Lacy Park in San Marino.

We’ll offer as much coverage as we can, as soon as we can.

Coaches and parents, please send short recaps, complete results and photos to info@sgvtrackandfield.net

CIF Rankings: South Hills, California & Whittier Join the Fun

With two weeks down in the season, everyone has raced, and the rankings are based on performance and not potential.  On the strength of those performances, both the South Hills boys and girls move into the CIF-SS Divisional Rankings, as do the boys from Whittier and California.

In the commentary on the rankings from Dyestatcal’s Rich Gonzalez, South Hills girls “move into the poll after a nice showing at Woodbridge.” and “Off-the-radar Whittier makes nice jump into Top 10 after overall merged score victory at Rosemead.”

This now gives us nine boys teams and eight girls teams in the rankings.  For many years, SGV XC has been underrepresented at the top of the Southern Section, and now we have a bit more than our share.  Well done to the hard working athletes and coaches who’ve made it happen.

SGV in the CIF Rankings

  • Div. I – Arcadia ( #1 this week, #1 last week boys,  #5/8 girls), California & Whittier (=#10/nr boys)
  • Div. II – Glendora (#5/6 boys)
  • Div. III – Bonita (#3/4 girls), Damien (#4/10 boys), South Hills (#9/nr boys, #9/nr girls), South Pasadena (#9/9 boys, #10/10 girls)
  • Div. IV – Don Bosco (#1/1 boys), Flintridge Sacred Heart (#4/4), Mayfield (#5/7)
  • Div. VFlintridge Prep (#4/4 boys, #2/5 girls), Pasadena Poly (#7/7 boys, #6/6 girls)

Week 2 Round Up: Arcadia Still There, Many Others Coming!

This past weekend saw reigning National and everything champs Arcadia boys defend their first title at the Woodbridge Invitational.  The Apaches had an amazing day, but California and Damien also staked their claim to future CIF and State meet spots.  Arcadia senior Ryan Vargas was again the top SGV athlete of the week, with his 14:27 effort leading six other SGV athletes (including five teammates) under 15:00!

On the girls side, Div. I ranked Arcadia was also the top local team, with their combined 89:20 leading the SGV by a large margin.  The Apaches’ Veronica Yamane and Alejandra Quintero, both at 17:17, shared top honors among the SGV, along with divisional race winners Marissa Scott (Jr, Bonita), 17:20 in the White division, and Bailee Henry (Jr, El Rancho) Blue division winner in 17:45.

In the SGV hosted Rosemead Invitational, locals Whittier and Mayfield took top honors on the boys and girls side.  The Cubs put five in the top fifteen to win the girls side easily and confirm their Div. IV ranking, while Whittier junior Marilu Pulido was the top local and 3rd overall in 17:59.  Her Cardinal teammates narrowly edged out State Div. III champs St. John Bosco to win the boys meet, and were led by senior Aaron Mora (14:40), 2nd overall and tops in the SGV.

La Salle junior Daniel De La Torre traveled alone to the big Mt. Carmel Invitational in San Diego and finished nearly alone, winning his heat and finishing 8th overall in 15:16 on a hilly 2.95 miles course.

Rosemead: Mayfield and Whittier to the Front

The Mayfield Cub

The San Gabriel Valley’s “Woodbridge” – the 30th Annual Rosemead Invite, took off under the lights Saturday, and ended with some of the strongest performances ever.  The event is run in class races over a fast, flat 3-mile course.

In a power merge of all the races, Div. IV #7 Mayfield, the only ranked school in the meet and winners of last week’s Prep League Cluster meet, showed their quality with an easy 56pt/92:28 win among the girls.  The Cubs placed all five scorers in the Top 15 overall. Their best was soph Alyssa Reyes (6th/18:13), joined up front by senior Coley Mozillo (9th/18:20).

The SGV showed it’s quality as the local teams took the next three spots – Walnut (100/93:17), host Rosemead (183/97:05) and Los Altos (192/97:39).  There were overall Top Ten individual performances from Walnut soph Melanie Deciga (4th/18:10) and frosh Anahi Betart (7th/18:14), Panther senior Kelly Luc (10th/18:25) and Whittier junior Marilu Pulido was 3rd overall in 17:59.
