Palomares #2: Claremont Stays on Top

The Palomares League, featuring five ranked teams, met up for their second cluster meet on Tuesday. They had slightly cooler weather (mid 80’s) and tougher course – the 3 mile Invite course at Bonelli Park.  The day saw strong team battles and several big individual performances.  Claremont took both sides, with Ayala and Bonita reversing their order from the first meet in both races

Bonita senior Kelsey Creese was the Girls best in 18:16.9, edging out Sydney Tullai (Ayala – 18:21.6) the winner of the first meet.  Their teams reversed order too, with Ayala edging Bonita for second. The Bulldogs were especially helped by frosh Mikaela Ramirez (14th/19:16.2), who did run Varsity at the first race.  Junior Annie Boos was best for the winners at 3rd/18.27.2.

Savannah Yi, moving up three spots from the previous meet, was fourth placed Glendora’s best at 7th/18:46.4.  Senior Anabelle Chang (23rd/23:25.1) was best for Diamond Bar, and South Hill’s best was Olivia Valderrama (8th/18:48.5).

On the Boys side, Claremont slipped a few points from the first meet but had a bigger margin of victory.  Steven Kahn (Jr, Ayala) was again the winner in 15:13.3, followed closely by CHS’ Ryan Renken in 15:15.7.  But Bonita was able to add Dillon Beckum (4th/15:44.0), who did not compete in the first meet, and a big step up performance from senior Noah Anderson (3rd/15:31.6) to take second in the team race.  Noah improved five places and 20 seconds on a day when most of the top finishers ran close to the same times the did at Legg Lake.

The other teams were in a nearly three way tie in the first meet, but differentiated themselves this week. South Hills was a clear fourth, led by the frosh duo Devin & Dillon Novencido Hightower who were 16th & 17th at 16:36 and 16:37.  Diamond Bar fronted a nice performance from Paul Abdo, 6th/15:45.4 for fifth, while Glendora was led by soph Phillip Reynolds who made a nice jump up to 21st/16:54.4.

With todays result, Claremont leads the league standings on both sides with 10 points, and Ayala and Bonita are tied with 7.  They are now strong favorites to retain their league championship, needing to finish 3rd or worse to be knocked off.  And absent major trouble, these three should be the CIF teams.
