The tough Sierra League, featuring area teams Diamond Bar, Damien/St. Lucy’s, and Glendora, began league competition on Tuesday, racing on the 5k course at Bonelli Park in San Dimas. The Tartan boys ran very strongly to win, placing four in the top five and six in the first eleven. St. Lucy’s, running without two top runners, was second to CIF Div II ranked Ayala. Cross country is a tough sport – no breaks, no time outs to consult with the coaches, with steep and unpredictable surfaces. And in this part of the season – we also get heat. Saturday was blazing hot, but the SGV’s runners overcame the heat to turn in some amazing performances, most notably Jessica Mendez’s 19:32 for 5k at the Stanford Invite, ran when it was 104 degrees! She was joined by Duarte’s Fabian Velasco as the SGV’s top performer for Week 3, while the Los Altos boys turned in the top team performance with their Div 2 win at the Bell-Jeff Invitational at L.A’s Griffith Park.
West Covina and Azusa took the long trip north to this prestigious meet which attracts nearly 100 schools from several states. It’s run on the university’s beautiful golf links over a gently rolling 5 kilometer course. As it was throughout the state, it was super-hot, but Jessica Mendez led the West Covina girls to an outstanding finish in the tough conditions.
Bassett, Bishop Amat, Duarte, Ganesha, and Los Altos traveled to L.A.’s Griffith Park to run over the hilly 3 mile course. The meet attracted over 70 schools are featured some of the top teams in the State, which now includes the Los Altos boys by virtue of their win in the Div 2 race.
Baldwin Park, Charter Oak, Rowland and San Dimas traveled to Fullerton’s Craig Park to take part in this low key meet, contested by 30 teams over a rolling 3 mile course on an increasingly hot day. Continue reading Sunny Hills: Really Hot
This is a big, well run meet, and South Orange County usually provides cool weather, but not this year. Almost all of the better performers from the SGV’s Bonita and Diamond Bar came from the early morning races, with the Bearcat girls showing the best. The meet was contested on a 3 mile, net downhill course at the host school. Continue reading Dana Hills: Bonita Girls Step Up The San Antonio League was scheduled to kick off the cluster meet season yesterday on the Bonelli Park 3 mile course, but second-hand word says the meet was postponed due to high heat. This weekend, comparatively fewer ESGV teams will compete and they will be more spread out, heading to Orange County and Northern California in search of fast times. This the first week of an experiment in using the SGV Champs site for SGV Trib Area XC and Track news. Week 2 of the season saw the Glendora boys and St. Lucy’s girls excell against top competition. The top local performers were Jayson Perez (SR-South El Monte) and Lauren Justus (JR-Glendora). Below, you’ll find coverage of the Rosemead, Woodbridge, and Mt. Carmel Invites, and you’ll find a ranking of the Top Ten local performers after the jump. If the Rosemead Invite were a child’s jacket, the tag inside would read, “I belong to Jayson Perez“. The South El Monte senior followed up last year’s dominance of this local meet with a blazing 14:10 effort. Never really pressed and always under control, he scorched the 2.9 mile, mostly flat course. On the girls side, the top performances came in the team results, as locals West Covina (89), Rosemead (156), and Arroyo (161) swept the top three team places.
Nine local schools were among the 180 teams that ran is this huge, high quality meet. Woodbridge attracts teams from all of California and several other states. The meet is run over a super-fast, completely flat 3 mile course. The top local performance came from CIF-SS Div III 5th-ranked St. Lucy’s, the only locals competing in the prestigious Sweepstakes race in the evening. While they only finished 15th, most of the schools were from the larger divisions. The Regents outperformed all but one Div III school and reconfirmed their place in the top ten. |
